At Meadowview of Johnston, we don’t believe in a one-size-fits all approach to memory care. Every community is different and every person is unique and deserves dignity and respect. We designed our community with this focus in mind.
Light and Bright
Our Memory Care’s location on the first floor features many windows that let in natural sunlight. Looking out those windows, you’ll see courtyard and tree-line views. A secure outdoor courtyard allows residents the opportunity for fresh air and sunlight.
According to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, “being outside in sunlight, especially in the morning when the sun is at its brightest, can help improve functioning, make individuals more alert, lower their risk of falls and reset their body’s internal clock.”
Space to Spread Out
All residents have private apartments where they can feel at home. Most are large studio apartments, with a limited number of one-bedroom apartments, as well. Apartment doors have shadowboxes with items specific to each resident to help them identify their apartment.
We encourage residents to explore our spacious common areas, such as the living room and dining room. These areas allow for activities designed for individuals with dementia and chair exercises led by Blue Stone Therapy.
We also invite Memory Care residents to participate in events with Assisted Living and Independent Living residents when possible.
Results of this study by Prof. Jiska Cohen-Mansfield found “improved engagement and mood during group activities as compared to control no-group times.”
Nutritious and Delicious
Residents have their choice of chef-prepared meals served restaurant style, as well as snacks available throughout the day. Individuals should be able to share their preferences when possible, but not to be overwhelmed with options.
“People living with cognitive impairment often have the desire and ability to participate in decision-making about their everyday care, although this is regularly underestimated by their staff and family care partners,” states a study by Rachel Louise Daly, Frances Bunn and Claire Goodman. “Shared decision-making has the potential to improve quality of life for both the person living with dementia and those who support them.”
Services Available
A healthcare provider from Metro Geriatric Services visits Meadowview of Johnston monthly. Services include foot care every nine weeks, wound care as needed and in-house lab appointments.
Individuals who utilize our partnering pharmacy, Heartland Pharmacy, receive a discount.
Meadowview of Johnston partners with hospice professionals when possible to accommodate hospice needs.
Conveniently Located
Meadowview of Johnston’s location at 5555 Pioneer Pkwy. Johnston, IA, 50131 is one block off from Merle Hay Road. While it is close to this main thoroughfare with shopping options nearby, it feels more secluded than that, backing up to a trail and pasture.
